Jazz & contemporary music

Every Saturday during the school year, we hold a free jazz jam and workshop which is open to middle and high school aged students. The session is facilitated by MAF instructors and is part improv class, part repertoire class, and part jam session. Students from around Long Island join us and have the singular opportunity to learn from our world class faculty in a safe, encouraging, and fun environment. Please call 516-292-2777 if you would like more information about this exciting, no-cost program.

Periodically, guest artists workshop with our students as well. Recent guests include jazz tenor player Sam Dillon, and trumpeter Tony Glausi.

Our Core Values

  • Create a hub on Long Island that focuses on teaching jazz and contemporary music to the next generation

  • Fill the gaps students have in the areas of music theory, improvisation, jazz phrasing, etc., allowing them to play “beyond the page” and improvise in real time over a variety of genres including jazz, pop, rock, blues, and more

    • Create “working bands” that can play events around our community throughout the year

  • Give back by using program funds to donate instruments to needy local communities and also provide scholarships

  • Prepare students for careers in the arts
